Overview

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Level 3-4 to support our team at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. 

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer will support facility operations, maintenance, and new facility projects through design, construction, and commissioning. The Engineer will be part of a multi-discipline engineering organization providing engineering services in full compliance with N3B Engineering Standards, Procedures, and relevant codes and standards. This position is for an advanced Mechanical Engineer with extensive knowledge in engineering design, fabrication, construction, inspections, and acceptance testing. Experience in engineering aspects for design and maintenance of at least one the following types of systems is required.

• Control systems
• Pressurized fluid systems
• Nuclear ventilation systems
• Mobile Equipment
• Well Drilling
• Code Welding

Previous experience as a qualified Cognizant System Engineer is a plus but not required.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Engineer will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner; will maintaining required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
• Provide day-to-day engineering support to operations, maintenance, and project management organizations.
• Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of wide scope and complexity.
• Coordinate completion of milestones associated with specific projects.
• Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines, organizations, and customers in completion of assigned tasks.
• Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations for design packages.
• Develop maintenance requirements for systems and equipment.
• Assess compliance of existing systems and identify corrective actions.
• Establish quality assurance requirements for material procurements.
• Perform field walk downs of existing structures and systems to develop accurate as-built documentation.
• Implement the N3B Conduct of Engineering Program
• Utilize strong ethics and conduct of operations principles to ensure fully compliant engineering deliverables.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
Level 3:
• Thorough understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts of engineered systems and component maintenance requirements
• Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult technical problems.
• Demonstrate advanced understanding in the application of national codes and standards including the ASME, ANSI, ASHRAE, AWS, DOE-O-420.1C etc.
• Demonstrated broad-based design experience with engineered systems.
• Skill and ability to perform complex professional tasks under general supervision and guidance. Independently determine and develop approach to problem solutions.
• Contribute to completion of specific programs or projects.
• Ability to organize own work independently to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties
• Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with project stakeholders and other customers

 

Level 4:
• Extensive technical expertise and full knowledge of other related disciplines.
• Demonstrate advanced understanding in the application of national codes and standards such as ASME, ANSI, ASHRAE, AWS, ISA, DOE O 420.1C, DOE-STD-1189 etc.
• Demonstrated broad-based design experience in new or existing facilities
• Advanced skills and ability to perform complex engineering tasks without requiring appreciable direction.
• Ability to organize project work independently to meet established objectives.
• Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with project stakeholders and other customers

 

Education and Experience Required:
Level 3:
Bachelors' degree in Mechanical or other engineering discipline combined with 5 years of relative experience. At least 2 years of nuclear experience preferred, but not required.


Level 4:
Bachelors' degree in Mechanical or other engineering discipline combined with 9 years of relevant experience. At least 5 years of nuclear experience preferred, but not required.
